· Pipe surge and water hammer are two related but independent phenomena which arise when fluid flowing in a pipe is accelerated or decelerated. The associated pressure transients can be damaging to pipe work or components and systems must be designed to avoid or with stand them.
· The equipment designed by clearly demonstrates the different effects resulting from gradual or instantaneous changes in fluid velocity. Effect of initial fluid velocity can also be investigated. Pipe surge resulting from a gradual change in fluid velocity is clearly seen as fluctuating changes in head in a surge shaft.
· Water hammer resulting from a rapid change in fluid velocity is clearly seen as large changes in pressure monitored using a pair of transducers and indicated using an oscilloscope. The equipment comprises two stainless steel pipes connected to a constant head tank. A service module provides the water supply to the head tank and also incorporates a volumetric tank for flow rate measurement, sump tank, circulating pump and flow control valve.
· Water enters the two test pipes via the constant head tank and discharges into the volumetric tank. A dump valve in the volumetric tank returns the water to the sump tank.
· The pipe surge test section incorporates a clear acrylic surge shaft to enable visualization of its oscillatory characteristics to be demonstrated. A metric scale on the shaft permits the height of the oscillations to be measured. The test pipe terminates with a lever operated gate valve and separate flow control valve.

· The present set-up is designed to study three type of flow measuring devices. These are orifice meter, Venturimeter and rotameter. The set-up also facilitates the end user to calculate fluid discharge through these devices. By determining the co-efficient of discharge of venturi meter and orifice meter, these devices can be used as a direct flow meter and can be installed in a fluid line. Rotameter is provided with a pre-calibrated scale. By passing a known flow of fluid through the rotameter and comparing this to provided scale reading, end user can recalibrate the rotameter. The apparatus consists of three pipe lines emerging outfrom a common manifold. All three pipe line has been installed with a test section. One has venturi meter, second has an orifice meter and third one is having a rotameter. The Venturi meter, Orifice meter and Rotameter are connected in parallel and any one of them can be put in operation by operating valves provided at the downstream. Pressure taping from venturi meter and orifice meter are taken out to pressurized differential pressure manometer. Present set-up is self-contained water re-circulating unit, provided with a sump tank, centrifugal pump etc. Water is pumped by means of centrifugal pump and passing through the test sections, it returns back to the sump which make the system re-circulating type. Flow of water is diverted either to measuring tank or sump tank with the means of a flow diverter, when needed. Flow control valve and by-pass valve are fitted in water line to conduct the experiment on different flow rates. Flow rate of water is measured with the help of measuring tank with piezometer and stopwatch. The supplied set-up is complete in all respect. The test section of “Boundary Layer Apparatus” has been developed to perform various experiments of aerodynamics and fluid flow. This is a open circuit Wind Tunnel, provides a region of air flow. A layer of fluid, which comes in contact with the boundary surface, adheres to it on account of viscosity, as a real fluid flow past a solid boundary. As a result, ‘no slip’ condition prevails. If the boundary is at rest, the fluid at the boundary has zero velocity and the velocity increases if the fluid is away from the boundary. Thus, there, is a thin layer in the vicinity of the boundary within which the velocity has been affected because of the boundary & viscous effects. This thin layer has been termed as the “Boundary Layer”.
